Gambling relapse: what to do after a slip

The short answer

If you gambled again, stop and don’t chase the loss. In the next 24 hours, close the route you used, tell one person you trust, and contact support such as 1-800-MY-RESET. Then look at what led up to the slip and add a barrier there. A slip is information, not the end of recovery.

A slip is not starting over

Many people who stop gambling for good have setbacks along the way. The days, weeks or months you went without gambling still happened, and the skills you built are still yours. The most important thing now is shortening the time between the slip and getting back on track.

The first 24 hours

  1. Don’t chase. The urge to win back what you just lost is strongest now. Step away from the screen.
  2. Close the route. Delete the app, close the account, and add the site to GambleGuard so it’s blocked immediately.
  3. Lock down money. Remove saved cards and turn on your bank’s gambling block if you haven’t already.
  4. Tell someone. A friend, a sponsor, a counselor, or the helpline at 1-800-MY-RESET. Secrecy is where slips turn into relapses.

Learn from what happened

Once the moment has passed, look back without judging yourself. What happened in the hours before? Were you tired, stressed, bored, or drinking? Was it payday or a big game? Did you find a site or app that wasn’t blocked? Each answer points to a specific change.

Close the gap

  • If it was a new site, block it and report it to GambleGuard so it’s added for everyone.
  • If it was a device with no blocker, add one.
  • If it was a trigger like payday, plan something for that time and ask someone to hold your cards.
  • If it was an urge you couldn’t ride out, practice the urge techniques before the next one.

Keep support close
